2020 Matrix Summer Camp

Join a Matrix Teaching Artist on screen for two theme-based week-long camps!

(Following approved COVID-19 guidelines)

The weekend before your camp session begins, a package will be delivered to your home containing a daily challenge with special instructions. Each day, campers have between 9 am and 4 pm to successfully meet the daily challenge. To do this, prerecorded, creative play programming will be posted, and Teaching Artists will be available via email and/or by phone to talk through any questions. At the end of each day, Matrix will host a live session where campers can show off and talk through what they created during the day. We will spice up the week with a few "Master Classes". On Fridays we plan to host an end-of-camp "party" and performance showcase.

This year's camp themes are based on

the award-winning books What Do You Do With A Problem and

What Do You Do With An Idea by Kobi Yamada!

Additional Relevant Information:

Computer / screen access is only needed from 3-4 pm each day when we host our virtual group session. 1-2 hours of daily recorded (video and audio) programming can be accessed anytime before

3 pm.

Camp challenges are meant to be accomplished independently by the campers. They may need assistance and, at times, limited participation from family members may make the challenge easier for them. However, a Teaching Artist will be "on call" and available from 9 am-3 pm each day of camp to answer questions and help campers with their challenges. There will be options for families to be involved if desired, but that is not required.

Sample Day of Virtual Camp:

Campers open an envelope and receive a character name and occupation prop with detailed written instructions explaining that they will be "interviewed" during our group session at the end of the day. To prepare they need to create a monologue explaining what their day looks like and demonstrate the job as they talk about it. To prepare, campers access prerecorded video and audio sessions. The daily greeting will also explain the challenge, followed by a physical and vocal warm-up that will expand to help them create a "character voice". The prerecorded audio for this day will be a movement exercise where they explore how to make their bodies move like their characters. At any time during camp non-synchronous hours (9 am-3 pm) families or campers can email or call Matrix and a Teaching Artist will be available for "office hours" to assist with any questions, or to guide students who may be struggling with a concept. As a bonus, a prerecorded, 45-minute Character Development Master Class, taught by one of Matrix's professional actors, will be accessible. At 3 pm, campers will log onto our virtual group session and our Teaching Artist will explain the interview game that they have been prepping for all day. They will perform for each other. Once performances are completed, we will leave the group session open for the campers to socialize with one another.
